PowerFlex 40P - How to tune the motor?

It is a good practice to tune a motor when it is first used with a particular drive. A motor tune could improve the motor performance and avoid future instability problems.

The auto tuning of a PowerFlex 40P, can be done via parameter A127 [Autotune]. The Autotune is an internal algorithm embedded in the drive's firmware. Its purpose is to know more about the motor connected to the drive. After a successful Autotune, parameters A128 [IR Voltage Drop] and A129 [Flux Current] are configured to the best possible value.

It is highly advisable to perform rotate tune (load uncoupled), to calculate both parameters.

For a small motor (0.5 A, 230V, 50Hz) a example of parameter settings could be:

P031 [Motor NP Volts] --> 230 VAC. (from your motor NP)
P032 [Motor NP Hertz] --> 50 Hz. (from your motor NP)
P033 [Motor OL Current] --> 1A (depending of the motor characteristics)
P034 [Minimum Freq] --> 0 Hz
P035 [Maximum Freq] --> 50 Hz (from your motor NP)
P036 [Start Source] --> 5 (if a comm. Card is used, otherwise related to your I/O wiring)
A126 [Motor NP FLA] --> 0.5 A (from your motor NP)
A127 [Autotune] --> 2 (to perform an dynamic rotational tune)
After those parameters are set, THE DRIVE WILL WAIT FOR A VALID START COMMAND, coming for comms. if P036=5, (Drive Explorer/Executive for example) otherwise, use your input configured as a start.

After a valid start, the static tune routine will start (the shaft will not move for a few seconds and a pitch noise will be heard). After a few seconds (typically 5 sec), the drive will start to accelerate following the default acceleration ramp until it reaches the 75% of Maximum Frequency. It then will stay at that speed for a few seconds and then goes back to zero speed following the default deceleration ramp.
